EQ2 is a brand new game developed and published by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). SOE bought Verant Interactive (who created the original EverQuest title) and retained many of the developers who developed (and continue to develop) the original EverQuest. SOE has combined these stellar developers with in-house SOE developers to produce EQ2.
No. EQ2 is not a sequel in the strictest of terms but a continuation of the storyline. Not only does EQ2 use a different class and skill system, much has changed in the world of Norrath in the last 500 years, including the death of your EQLive character. But, there are implemented heritage element in EQ2, allowing new characters to carry on the name and gain an heirloom relative to their EQLive character(s). There are also heritage quests available that you can do to obtain items from the original Everquest game. A few examples of this are the Flowing Black Silk Sash, Dwarven Work Boots, or the Bone Bladed Claymore.
